Basic Counseling Skills

This course will teach students about the overall use of skill and technique as it pertains to treatment with substance use disorders.  Skills to be covered will include:  respect, confrontation, self-disclosure, empathy, immediacy, genuineness, concrete, mirroring, potency, and summarizing.  These skills will be taught in the format of a workshop with the participants role-modeling each skill while receiving feedback from peers.  The cases will be typical of today and the patterns of addiction.  Each participant will demonstrate increased awareness of each skill.

Name: Dean Hale
Credentials: CASAC

Dean is a Credentialed Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselor, Recovery Coach, and is currently the Director of Residential Services for Twin County Recovery Services. He has worked in several different modalities of treatment including a hospital-based detox and rehab unit, halfway houses, and an intensive residential program. Dean worked as an Intervention Coordinator and has facilitated Interventions as well. He has worked with both mandated and non-mandated populations and is a member of the Columbia County Drug Court Team. In his free time he produces a Public Access Television Series called INSIDE ADDICTION, speaks within the community to Middle and High School students about his recovery from addiction, and stays active by volunteering and doing service work in sober support fellowships.
