Physical and Pharmacological Effects
As technology creates highly sophisticated methods of exploring the intricate workings of the human brain, professionals in the field of substance abuse need to acquire current information to apply to their treatment practices. This workshop will explore this new research beyond the basics of general neurochemistry, and will include such topics as multiple neurotransmitter subtypes, protein G and second messenger systems, auto-regulator receptor sites, the impact of specific drugs on individual neurotransmitter systems, and the potential for long term change or permanent damage to the brain due to alcohol and/or other drug abuse or addiction. Participants will also discuss the implications of the research on their current treatment practices, and the potential for the successful recovery of their clients.
