Defense Mechanisms, Coping Skills and Personality Disorders

This training will address the psychological strategies that individuals use to cope with reality in efforts to maintain equilibrium and sense of self (ego). This will include identification and review of coping skills and behavioral symptoms that characterize defense mechanisms. From this, the training will focus on the pathology and persistent use of defense mechanisms and the symptoms and clinical definitions of (common) personality disorders witnessed in the treatment setting. Behavioral and psychopharmacological methods will be addressed and discussed as clinical strategies of treatment planning.  To enhance the didactic delivery, there will be interactive exercises and many opportunities for discussion.

Bio: Frank Pouliot, M.S., CASAC is the Professional Development Coordinator at Conifer Park in Glenville, New York. He has a Masters in Human Services Administration and is a credentialed alcoholism and substance abuse counselor (CASAC). He has 22 years experience directing clinical programs in the field of mental health and addiction services and over eight years experience as a professional development trainer and facilitator of on-line and classroom curriculums. He is an adjunct professor at Schenectady County Community College, the College of St Rose, Empire State College and the University of Phoenix.  He is also a faculty member of the NYS OASAS Academy of Addiction Studies. Frank has two wonderful children pursuing their professional careers and he enjoys spending time with family and friends.
